For people to choose a particular game, they need to be interested. Traditionally, games attract with an unusual idea or a bright design. Some offer the chance to win real money and prizes, like one of our projects, the sweepstakes game site. Players get tokens which can be spent on participating in a draw for real prizes: cash, equipment, travel. The prospect of winning gets people to start playing.
NFT-projects have taken this idea to the next level. Combining game mechanics with blockchain technologies gave birth to online games in which all players’ actions are saved as transactions in a blockchain, instead of game money is cryptocurrency, and characters and objects are NFT-tokens.
Now people don’t just kill monsters in the game, but get real money for it – cryptocurrency that is traded on the exchange. Moreover, they buy in-game NFTs, which can be viewed as an investment: if the game becomes even more popular, its currency and tokens will grow in value. Yesterday – gamers, today – cryptoinvestors.
The first widely known NFT game was Axie Infinity, released in late 2019. Over the next three years, there were many projects that developed its idea. All of them are based on the “do something to earn” concept.
Play to earn, or P2E, is play to earn. Users get in-game cryptocurrency and NFT items that are used in the story: weapons, items, and characters for completing game tasks. Play-to-earn projects include Axie Infinity itself, as well as Mobox, My Neighbor Alice, Mines of Dalarnia, and others.
An example of non-standard P2E game mechanics is Zed Run. The user buys an NFT horse and participates in a race. Rewards are paid if the horse wins a prize. Horses can also be bred and sold.
Move to earn, or M2E, is move to earn. Users buy virtual NFT sneakers and get rewarded for their runs. Examples of projects: STEPN, Step. App, Calo Run.
The classic example of an M2E game is STEPN. To start playing, you have to buy NFT sneakers. When a player walks or runs at the speed provided by their sneaker class, they receive a reward. The reward is limited to a day’s supply of energy.
Wear to earn, or W2E, is to wear to earn. Users buy NFT clothes, shoes and accessories, put them on their digital avatars in games and meta universes, and get rewarded for it.
